A living notebook by Riel St. Amand
The reproducible trail for the offensive line unit metric. Both axes re-run live on the public ol_unit_season view.
Every cell re-runs in your browser against current data. Covers 1999 through 2025. Data refreshed 1 day ago.
We asked: what can you honestly measure about an offensive line?
One unit, two outputs. The public ol_unit_season view carries protection above expected (pressure risk priced by rushers and hold time) and run-block plus-minus for every team-season since 2016. The cell below re-runs their correlation live; our published run said .254. A line has two skills, and knowing one tells you little about the other.
Rigor check
Protection above expected against Run block plus minus
Pearson correlation, re-run in your browser on current data.
The pricing receipts are scripted: the validity flip from raw pressure rate (-.136 against team pass efficiency) to the priced residual (+.236), and the hold-time endogeneity check where boards with and without the adjustment agree at .914, both need the play-level pricing harness described in the article backtest block. The expected and allowed columns ship here side by side so the residual is auditable.
